In order to ensure high yields and boost corn production this year, while also meeting the goal of increasing overall output, the expert group from Dongping County, Shandong Province, conducted thorough discussions and developed a series of technical strategies aimed at achieving higher productivity. These measures are designed to support farmers in improving their harvests through scientifically backed agricultural practices.
One of the key factors behind these strategies was the success of last year’s agricultural technology demonstration project, where six main techniques were promoted across the county. Among these, the use of formula fertilization received widespread recognition and led to significant cost savings for participating households. To further enhance yield potential, the expert team visited several demonstration farms, set up high-yield trials on small and medium-sized plots, and achieved notable results.
For instance, Xizhaoyue, a science and technology demonstration household in Dayang Township, applied 100 kg of formula fertilizer per mu and added 50 kg of urea. The result was a yield of 1600 kg per mu, which was an increase of 400 kg compared to the previous year’s average of 1200 kg. This led to a net economic gain of 190 yuan per mu, with an input-output ratio of 1:4.8. Similarly, Tang Hukai from Xinhu Township used 100 kg of formula fertilizer and added 20 kg of urea during the big bell mouth stage, achieving an average yield of 1470 kg per mu—270 kg more than the annual average. His net profit increased by 124 yuan, with an impressive input-output ratio of 1:7.2. These results clearly show that the addition of nitrogen fertilizer is essential for achieving high yields.
Based on these findings, the expert group has outlined a detailed fertilization strategy tailored to different types of farming areas:
**Fertilization Technology**
**(1) Top-dressing Amounts:**
Taking into account the test results and the growth characteristics of corn, the expert group recommends that demonstration households and corn growers implement staged fertilization, with an emphasis on increasing nitrogen application. The specific guidelines are as follows:
- **Core Demonstration Area and High-Yield Research Field:**
Three top-dressing stages are required. For every 100 kg of seeds produced, 3 kg of nitrogen (N), 1 kg of phosphorus (Pâ‚‚Oâ‚…), and 2 kg of potassium (Kâ‚‚O) should be used. In the small bell mouth stage, apply full formula fertilizer, then add 25 kg of urea during the big bell mouth period. After tasseling, apply another 10 kg of urea as grain fertilizer. If no formula fertilizer is used in the early stage, all phosphorus, potassium, and zinc fertilizers should be applied once, with 40% of the total nitrogen applied at that time. Then, 50% during the big bell mouth stage, and 10% after tasseling. This helps improve leaf photosynthesis, strengthen grain filling, and increase grain weight.
- **Demonstration and Radiation Households:**
Typically, one-time application of formula fertilizer is used in the small bell mouth stage, followed by 25 kg of urea during the big bell mouth stage. If no formula fertilizer is used, apply all phosphorus, potassium, and zinc at once, with 40% of nitrogen applied at that time. During the big bell mouth stage, 50–60% of the total nitrogen is added. If conditions allow, supplement with grain fertilizer after tasseling, adding 10% of the total nitrogen.
- **General Corn Fields:**
Apply all phosphorus, potassium, and zinc at once during the small bell mouth stage, using 40% of the total nitrogen. Then, apply 60% of the total nitrogen during the big bell mouth stage.
**(2) Top-dressing Method:**
Apply fertilizer 10–15 cm away from the base of the corn plant, at a depth of 12–15 cm. Avoid spreading it directly on the surface or mixing it with water. Water appropriately after top-dressing to ensure proper absorption.
These updated techniques are expected to significantly improve productivity and help farmers achieve better economic returns. By following these scientifically supported methods, the county aims to not only meet but exceed its corn production targets this season.
