How to grow good parsley in summer

Coriander, commonly known as parsley, is a flavorful herb often used in various cuisines. It thrives in cooler weather but is sensitive to high temperatures, stopping its growth when the temperature exceeds 30°C. Due to its difficulty in cultivation during hot seasons, growing parsley in summer can significantly boost economic returns. 1. **Variety Selection** Choose heat-resistant and slow-bolting varieties that grow quickly. Recommended options include Beijing parsley and North China leaf. These varieties are more resilient to summer conditions and ensure better yields. 2. **Soil Preparation** Select well-fertilized soil with good water retention and drainage. Avoid land that has been planted with parsley for more than five years. Ensure the soil is loose and free of previous crop residues to reduce pest and disease risks. Deep plowing is recommended, followed by making raised beds that are 1 to 1.5 meters wide. Apply 4,000 kg of farmyard manure and 100 kg of cake fertilizer per acre before planting. 3. **Seed Germination** Summer sowing of parsley is flexible, typically done between May and June, with harvest possible after 40 to 50 days. To improve germination, soak seeds in clean water for 24–30 hours, then place them on a moist, non-polluting cloth. Keep the seeds at a temperature of 20–25°C, and keep them covered with wet cloths to maintain moisture. Check and re-moisten twice daily. Germination usually takes 3–4 days. 4. **Sowing Seedlings** It's advisable to sow seedlings in the summer for better growth. After sowing, cover the surface with a layer of soil to reduce water evaporation and lower surface temperatures. The sowing method involves preparing the bed, reserving some soil for covering, watering thoroughly, and then sowing the seeds. Cover the seeds with 1–2 cm of soil and repeat the process. Use about 2 kg of seeds per mu. After sowing, gently press the soil and provide light irrigation if the weather is dry. 5. **Field Management** When seedlings reach 4–5 cm in height, perform weeding. When they are 2–4 cm tall, combine weeding with a light application of diluted manure. At 7–8 cm, apply the first top dressing, using around 20–30 kg of ammonium sulfate per mu. Keep the soil consistently moist, watering every 4–5 days depending on the weather. Shade is crucial during summer to protect the plants from excessive heat. Harvesting can be done in batches as needed, depending on plant density. (Hubei Dangyang Agricultural 110 Service Center)
