How to grow good parsley in summer

Parsley, commonly known as coriander, is a flavorful herb often mistaken for savory vegetables or oysters. It thrives in cooler weather and is sensitive to high temperatures, stopping its growth when the temperature exceeds 30°C. Due to its delicate nature, it can be challenging to grow during summer. However, cultivating parsley in the summer season can significantly boost economic returns, making it a profitable choice for farmers. 1. **Variety Selection** Choose heat-resistant, slow-bolting, and fast-growing varieties such as Beijing parsley or North China leaf. These varieties are better suited to withstand the summer climate and ensure a successful harvest. 2. **Soil Preparation** Select well-drained, fertile soil with good water retention and nutrient content. Avoid fields where parsley has been grown within the past five years to prevent disease buildup. Before planting, apply 4,000 kg of farmyard manure and 100 kg of cake fertilizer per acre. Remove all previous crop residues to reduce pest and disease risks. Deep plowing is recommended, followed by creating raised beds that are 1 to 1.5 meters wide. 3. **Seed Germination** Summer sowing of parsley is not strictly time-bound, usually done between May and June, with a harvest period of about 40 to 50 days after sowing. To improve germination, soak the seeds in clean water for 24 to 30 hours. After soaking, place them on a moist, non-polluting cloth, keeping a thickness of 2 to 3 cm. Cover the cloth with another wet layer and maintain a temperature of 20 to 25°C. Check the moisture level twice daily and keep the seeds slightly damp. Germination typically takes 3 to 4 days. 4. **Sowing Seedlings** It’s best to sow seedlings during the summer to ensure better growth. After spreading the seeds, cover the surface completely to reduce water evaporation and lower the soil temperature. The broadcasting method involves first preparing the seedbed, reserving some soil for the initial layer. Then fill the bed with water until it's evenly moist. After sowing, cover the seeds with 1 to 2 cm of soil, then broadcast the remaining seeds using the same technique. Use approximately 2 kg of seeds per mu. After sowing, gently press the soil and provide light protection. If the weather is dry and the seedlings show signs of stress, small furrow irrigation can be used to help them establish. 5. **Field Management** When the seedlings reach 4 to 5 cm in height, perform weeding. At 2 to 4 cm, combine weeding with light watering and apply diluted manure. When the seedlings are 7 to 8 cm tall, apply the first top dressing with 20 to 30 kg of ammonium sulfate per mu. Keep the soil consistently moist, watering every 4 to 5 days depending on the weather. Strict shading is crucial for summer parsley cultivation. Harvesting can be done in batches as needed, without strict timing. (Hubei Dangyang Agricultural 110 Service Center)
