The late rice high-yielding and water-saving cultivation technology developed by Yu Songxiang, a researcher at the Hunan Provincial Institute of Soil and Plant Resources, has recently achieved remarkable success. This innovative approach combines straw mulching with no-tillage and shallow-wet cultivation methods. Compared to traditional farming techniques, this method increases the number of effective panicles by 23,000 per 667 square meters (1 acre), and boosts the number of grains per panicle by 18.3 in late rice. During the critical period of high temperature and low rainfall, which typically occurs within 20 days after transplanting, the technology reduces the number of irrigation sessions by 50%, while also cutting water usage by 30 cubic meters per 667 square meters. In addition to these benefits, the technology offers several other advantages. First, it allows for efficient straw incorporation during harvest, helping farmers save time and labor in weeding, watering, and other tasks. Second, the straw mulch helps reduce solar radiation and lowers the surface soil temperature by 2-3°C, which is beneficial for late rice to regain its green color more effectively. Third, the use of straw in no-tillage practices enhances soil organic matter and provides additional potassium, meeting the nutritional needs of late rice during its growth phase. Lastly, this method prevents nitrogen competition between microorganisms and rice seedlings during the decomposition of rice straw, promoting healthier early growth and ultimately increasing both the number of effective panicles and the grain yield per panicle.
