As we look back on the month, we're reminded of CPR and AED Awareness Week and all the fun we had celebrating this year! It's incredible how each year brings new opportunities to highlight the importance of CPR and AED knowledge.
The history of CPR and AED Awareness Week dates back to 2007 when the American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), and the National Safety Council joined forces to dedicate one week annually to honor CPR and AED awareness. Since then, the first seven days of June have become a special time to underscore the significance of these life-saving skills and their potential impact on communities nationwide.
This year, we decided to celebrate the inspiring CPR instructors who make a daily difference by teaching life-saving skills. We reached out to each of them with five questions to gain insights into their work and motivations. Each day, we showcased one instructor on social media to highlight their dedication and achievements.
Check out their insightful responses and the impactful work they're doing in their communities. Show your support by following their social media pages to stay updated on their ongoing efforts!

**Sixth City (Cleveland, OH)**

1. **What got you involved with CPR & First Aid Training?**
As a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), I work primarily in cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgery. Initially, I started teaching because I felt comfortable with the material and found it to be a natural progression. Over time, my perspective evolved. I realized the immense value in educating others, particularly non-healthcare providers, as informal education can play a crucial role in preparing people for emergencies.
2. **Have you ever encountered a real-life CPR scenario?**
Unfortunately, yes—more times than I can count. Given the nature of my work with high-acuity patients, encountering emergencies is inevitable.
3. **What is your favorite moment or memory from CPR Training so far?**
Recently, I met a woman at an event while demonstrating hands-only CPR. She had a sternotomy scar, which piqued my curiosity. Out of respect for her privacy, I didn't ask, but she opened up about her cardiac arrest and subsequent open-heart surgery. It turned out she was one of my patients from the previous year! It was a deeply moving, almost poetic moment for both of us.
4. **What is one tip or advice you make sure to share with your students?**
Remember, doing something is always better than doing nothing. Even if your CPR isn't perfect, any attempt is better than no attempt. For instance, if you're uncomfortable with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, hands-only chest compressions are perfectly acceptable. Knowing you've done everything you could makes a significant difference, even if the outcome isn't ideal.
5. **What would you tell someone who is unsure about learning CPR & First Aid?**
Knowledge is power. Most cardiac arrests happen at home, meaning you're likely to be helping a loved one. Seconds matter in life-and-death situations. People often regret not getting trained, rather than regretting taking the initiative.
