Clever change of tire technology

When operating a farm vehicle, it's common for tires to become flat, punctured, or damaged. Knowing how to quickly and properly replace a spare tire is essential for minimizing downtime and ensuring safe operation. Below are some practical steps to help you change a tire efficiently and correctly. Always remember the direction of the wheel bolts. The nuts on the right-side wheels are typically right-handed (standard thread), while those on the left side are left-handed (reverse thread). This means that when loosening the left-side nut, you need to turn it clockwise, and when tightening, you should go counterclockwise. To prevent warping of the hub and uneven stress on the bolts, use a diagonal or cross-tightening method when securing the nuts. This ensures even distribution of force across all bolts. Before starting, use a socket wrench to loosen the wheel nuts slightly, then remove them temporarily. Next, raise the axle with a jack until the tire just lifts off the ground. At this point, fully loosen the nuts and carefully remove the wheel. Apply a small amount of lithium-based or calcium-based grease to the threads before reattaching the wheel. This helps prevent galling and makes future removal easier. Align the bolt holes carefully to avoid damaging the threads. Tighten the nuts by hand first, then lower the jack using a special spanner. Once the wheel is back on the ground, use a torque wrench to tighten each nut in a cross pattern, applying 200–400 Nm of torque for proper security. When mounting the tire assembly, ensure that the valve stem is aligned with the bevel of the rim for a secure fit. For twin-wheeled rear axles, there are additional considerations: - If the two tires show different levels of wear, install the one with a larger diameter and less wear on the outside. This helps maintain better contact with the road, especially on curved or arched surfaces. - If only the outer tire is being replaced, tighten the inner nuts first before securing the outer wheel. - When replacing both tires at once, lift the wheel twice using the jack to install the inner and outer tires separately. - Make sure the brake inspection holes on both wheels are staggered for easier access during maintenance. - Position the valve stems symmetrically on the inner and outer wheels for consistent pressure checks and adjustments. Taking these steps will not only make the tire-changing process faster but also help maintain the safety and performance of your farm vehicle. Always double-check everything before driving again to avoid any potential issues.
