As they feed, they excrete a sticky substance that promotes the growth of sooty mold, which can turn the leaves black and lead to wilting. Scale insects reproduce rapidly, with one female capable of laying hundreds of eggs in a single season. If left unchecked, they can severely weaken or even kill the plant.
To manage scale infestations, prevention is key. Regularly inspect your Clivia for signs of pests, especially on the undersides of leaves and along the stems. If only a few scales are present, you can remove them manually using a soft brush, a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol, or by gently scraping them off with a wooden stick. For more widespread infestations, insecticidal sprays such as 25% imidacloprid diluted at a ratio of 1:1000 or 40% omethoate at 1:1000 to 1:1500 can be applied. It’s recommended to spray the plant two times, spaced about a week apart, for best results.
In addition to scale insects, cockroaches can also pose a threat to Clivia, particularly when the plant is young. The tender roots of Clivia are vulnerable to damage from soil-dwelling pests like earthworms. These pests can burrow into the potting mix, damaging the root system and interfering with nutrient uptake, which may cause the plant to stop growing or even rot. To prevent this, regularly check the surface of the soil for small, round particles—these are often signs of earthworm activity. If detected, you can water the soil with a solution of 50% dichlorvos diluted at 1:1500 to 1:2000 to control the infestation effectively.
Proper care, regular monitoring, and timely intervention are essential in keeping Clivia healthy and pest-free. By staying attentive and taking action early, you can ensure your plants thrive without major issues.
