Fish meal that is mixed with cottonseed cake, rapeseed cake, urea, sand, and other impurities typically has its protein content reduced to around 40%. This adulteration not only lowers the nutritional value but also affects the quality and safety of the product. To identify whether fish meal is genuine or adulterated, several methods can be used, both sensory and physical.
(1) **Sensory Detection Method**:
High-quality fish meal should have a consistent particle size, with a noticeable presence of fish muscle fibers and only a small amount of fish bones, scales, and eyes. The color should be light yellow, brown, or dark brown, and it should feel loose, not clumpy or sticky. It should have a fresh, fishy aroma without any strong or unpleasant odors. In contrast, adulterated fish meal often contains foreign particles of different shapes and colors, with very few or no visible fish muscle fibers, bones, or scales. It may appear powdery, easily form lumps, feel sticky when touched, and emit an odd or foul smell.
(2) **Water Immersion Test**:
To perform this test, take a small sample of fish meal and place it in a glass container. Add ten times the volume of water, shake thoroughly, and let it sit for a while. If the fish meal is pure, it should remain mostly suspended in the water without settling at the bottom. However, if there are impurities such as sand or gravel, they will sink to the bottom. On the other hand, materials like cottonseed cake, feather meal, or bran will float on the surface. If you don't see any of these signs, and the mixture settles evenly without any visible floating or sinking particles, it may be genuine fish meal. This simple test can help quickly identify potential adulterants that might not be visible to the naked eye.
