Fish meal that is mixed with cottonseed cake, rapeseed cake, urea, sand, and other impurities can have its protein content reduced to as low as 40%. This adulteration not only affects the nutritional value but also makes it harder to identify genuine fish meal. Here are two effective methods to detect adulterated fish meal.
(1) Sensory Inspection Method: High-quality fish meal should have a consistent particle size, with a noticeable presence of fish muscle fibers and only a small amount of fish bones, scales, or eyes. The color should be light yellow, brown, or dark brown, and it should feel loose, without clumping or stickiness. It should have a fresh, fishy smell, but no foul odor. In contrast, adulterated fish meal often contains foreign particles of various shapes and colors, with few or no visible fish fibers, bones, or scales. It may appear powdery, easily form lumps, and feel sticky when touched. It might also have an unpleasant, strong smell, indicating poor quality or contamination.
(2) Water Immersion Test: To perform this test, take a small sample of fish meal and place it in a glass container. Add ten times the volume of water, shake well, and let it settle for a while. If the fish meal is pure, most of the particles will sink slowly. However, if there are impurities like sand, gravel, or minerals, they will settle at the bottom. On the other hand, materials such as cottonseed cake, feather meal, or bran will float on the surface. This method helps distinguish real fish meal from adulterated products by observing the behavior of different substances in water.
By using these simple yet effective techniques, buyers and producers can better assess the quality of fish meal and avoid purchasing inferior or contaminated products. Always ensure that your fish meal meets the expected standards to maintain the health and performance of livestock and aquaculture animals.
