How to Ferment Chicken Manure for Pond Fertilizer
Chicken manure is a valuable organic resource that can be used as both fertilizer and pond fertilizer, but it must be fully fermented before application. One effective method involves using a composting system or a specialized fertilizer fermenter. When dealing with large quantities of chicken manure, it's best to divide the material into smaller piles for more efficient fermentation.
Each small pile should be about 10 cubic centimeters in size. To begin the process, mix the chicken manure with a microbial starter culture. The recommended ratio is 1 part microbial culture to 1000 parts chicken manure. Before adding the microbes, dilute them with 5 times their volume in rice bran to ensure even distribution. Once mixed, add the prepared mixture evenly onto the chicken manure pile.
Next, add water to achieve a moisture level of around 60-65%. This optimal moisture content helps speed up the fermentation process and ensures more complete decomposition, which enhances the nutrient availability for both soil and pond applications. After mixing, cover the pile with breathable materials such as straw mats or burlap to retain heat and promote microbial activity.
In summer, the fermentation process typically takes about 7 days, while in winter, it may take up to 15 days. It’s important to monitor the temperature throughout the process and maintain it between 70-75 degrees Celsius. If necessary, turn the pile 2-3 times during the fermentation period to ensure even breakdown and prevent anaerobic conditions.
Properly fermented chicken manure not only improves soil fertility but also enhances water quality in ponds by providing essential nutrients for aquatic plants and microorganisms. Always make sure the final product has a uniform texture, a slightly acidic smell, and no foul odor, indicating that the fermentation is complete and safe for use.
