Beach Reservoir Construction

Water storage and shellfish cultivation is a pond-based aquaculture method practiced in the high-tide zones of the Inner Bay beach. This semi-enclosed system allows tidal water to flow into the pond during high tide, while retaining some water when the tide recedes. It is particularly suitable for cultivating intertidal shellfish such as mussels, clams, mud snails, and rainbow clams. The practice offers several advantages: it expands the available culture area by utilizing high-tide zones and previously unused tidal flats; it enhances food availability for shellfish, extends feeding time, and accelerates growth, thus shortening the farming cycle; it improves the breeding environment, increases survival rates, reduces seed costs, and boosts economic returns. As a result, this method proves to be both effective and efficient. With benefits like fast growth, low predation risk, high survival rates, high yields, easy management, and flexible site requirements, water storage and shellfish farming are seen as a promising future direction in aquaculture. Site selection and pond construction are critical steps in establishing a successful water storage and shellfish farm. For site selection, the chosen area should be submerged during high tide, with flat terrain, calm waters, and no nearby sources of industrial or domestic pollution. The substrate should match the environmental needs of the species being farmed. When constructing the pond, the size should be adapted to local conditions, typically ranging from 10 to 20 acres. The embankment height should be between 0.5 to 1.5 meters, with a base width of 3 to 5 meters. The embankments must be strong and durable, with an arched outer side to resist wave action. In areas with strong waves, stone embankments may be constructed to reduce costs and facilitate maintenance. The pond should include a ring ditch, central ditch, and branch ditches, each 0.5 to 1.0 meters wide and 0.2 to 0.3 meters deep. Depending on the size of the culture area, one or two inlets and outlets are installed, connected directly to the outer ditch, which serves as the main water exchange channel. Gates at the inlet and outlet, usually 0.8 to 1.1 meters in size, can be simple or specialized. The pond bottom should be flat, firm, and composed of soft clay or sandy sediment to ensure good water retention and healthy shellfish growth.
