In a significant breakthrough, researchers at Shenzhen Second People's Hospital have identified two previously unknown carbapenem resistance genes. This discovery marks a milestone in the global fight against antibiotic-resistant bacteria and could play a crucial role in improving the effective use of antibiotics.
The findings were made by Dr. Xu Xiaoping, deputy director of the hospital’s laboratory, as part of the Guangdong Science and Technology Project titled "Study on Integrator Gene and Drug Resistance Gene Box in Acinetobacter." After more than three years of research, Dr. Xu successfully identified two new OXA-type resistance genes, which are among the first of their kind to be discovered worldwide.
The genetic sequences of these newly found genes have been submitted to international gene banks, and they have now been officially named OXA-116 and OXA-117. These genes are associated with bacterial resistance to carbapenem antibiotics, a class of drugs often used as a last resort for treating severe infections.
Dr. Xu emphasized that bacterial infections can lead to serious conditions such as sepsis, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, skin infections, and central nervous system infections. In critical cases, carbapenems are commonly prescribed, but prolonged use can result in the development of drug-resistant strains, rendering the antibiotics ineffective.
This discovery is expected to have a major impact on clinical practices, helping to reduce the prevalence of carbapenem-resistant bacteria in severe infections. It also opens up new possibilities for developing innovative treatments to combat antibiotic resistance.
The study highlights the importance of continuous research into bacterial resistance mechanisms and underscores the need for more responsible antibiotic usage to prevent the spread of drug-resistant pathogens. As the world faces an increasing threat from antibiotic resistance, this breakthrough offers hope for more effective strategies in the future.
