In pig farming, it's essential to feed pigs appropriately based on their specific conditions. Providing the right type of feed at the right time helps reduce feeding costs and maximize economic returns.
For piglets weighing between 20 kg and 25 kg, their digestive systems are still developing and may not handle large amounts of roughage effectively. These young pigs require a high level of nutrients for growth, and if they're fed too much roughage, they may not absorb enough nutrition, which can slow down their development. If growth is compromised early on, it becomes harder to catch up later, potentially leading to "stuck pigs" that grow slowly. To avoid this, roughage should be limited during this stage. The feed should contain more than 18% protein, and about 0.5 kg of green or blue-green succulent feed should be provided daily. It's also important to vaccinate them against swine fever right after weaning.
For pigs in the 25 kg to 50 kg range, their digestive systems are more mature and capable of handling larger quantities of roughage. At this stage, feeding high-quality roughage is beneficial for their growth and helps them develop into strong, healthy animals without becoming overly large or difficult to manage.
For finishing pigs over 50 kg, their bodies have already developed the ability to deposit fat and muscle efficiently. At this stage, it's better to reduce roughage and focus on energy-dense feeds such as corn and protein-rich ingredients like soybean meal. Adding traditional Chinese medicine such as *Sophora flavescens* (16 grams per pig per day) can enhance digestion and promote weight gain. Additionally, including 5% pine needle powder in their diet has been shown to significantly increase daily weight gain by up to 23%, making the fattening process more efficient and helping pigs reach market weight faster.
