How to eliminate and renew breeding pigs

Breeding pigs play a crucial role in the pig industry, as they are the foundation for population growth and the core of the entire production system. Since breeding pigs have a limited productive lifespan, boars used in natural mating typically do not exceed 2 years, while sows usually do not go beyond 8 litters. In commercial settings, boars may be kept for up to 3–4 years, but their reproductive performance declines over time. Sows also show significant variation in breeding ability, which makes it essential to implement a scientifically sound breeding and replacement strategy. This helps maintain or even improve the productivity of the breeding herd, ultimately boosting farm profitability. So, how should breeders be replaced? The first step is to calculate the necessary data for elimination and renewal. Let's take 100 breeding sows as an example, with a farrowing rate of 2.3 per sow annually. For boars: Under natural mating, the ratio of boars to sows should not exceed 1:20. Therefore, 100 sows would require 5 boars (100 ÷ 20 = 5). With a typical replacement cycle of 2 years, about 2–3 boars need to be replaced each year. For sows: Considering an effective lifespan of 8 litters and an average of 2.3 litters per sow annually, the average productive life is around 3.5 years (8 ÷ 2.3 ≈ 3.5). This means that approximately 28.6% of the sow population should be replaced each year, or roughly 30 sows out of 100. That translates to about 2.5 sows being replaced monthly. In large-scale farms, this number may be adjusted weekly depending on the size and operational needs. When it comes to the actual process of eliminating and replacing breeding pigs, several principles should guide the decision-making: For sows, the elimination criteria include: 1. Sows that have reached breeding age and weight but fail to come into heat after 2–3 estrus cycles. 2. Sows that do not show estrus within 60 days post-weaning. 3. Sows that return to estrus 3–4 times consecutively without successful breeding. 4. Sows that have fewer than 6 litters or consistently produce low numbers of live births. 5. Sows with less than 6 functional teats, abnormal udder development, inverted nipples, or poor milk production. 6. Sows with poor maternal instincts, aggressive behavior, or low survival rates of piglets. 7. Sows that are slow to eat, overweight, lethargic, or show signs of poor health. 8. Sows that give birth to deformed or weak offspring. 9. Sows suffering from illness, disability, or reduced fertility due to aging. For boars, the main criterion is age, but those with poor semen quality, low libido, or aggressive behavior should also be removed promptly. Once a sow or boar is removed, it should be immediately replaced with a suitable replacement breeder to ensure continuous breeding efficiency and stable production levels. This systematic approach ensures that the breeding herd remains healthy, productive, and economically viable.
