Under natural environmental conditions, whether in reservoirs, lakes, exposed rock surfaces, ditches, ponds, or other water bodies, fish can reproduce naturally. However, with the continuous development of science and technology, water production units across the country have now largely mastered a new set of artificial breeding techniques through extensive testing and research.
When breeding fish artificially, it's crucial to select high-quality broodstock that are healthy, disease-free, and of optimal age. The ideal age for broodstock is between 3 to 5 years. Female fish should weigh at least 0.75 kg, while males should be above 0.48 kg. Fish that are well-developed and of good size make the best broodstock.
For cultivation, each acre of pond (with a depth of 1.5 to 1.8 meters) should contain approximately 80 to 100 broodstock, each weighing between 1.2 to 2.48 kg. It’s also recommended to include 4 to 5 kg of squid and 3 to 4 kg of polyculture per acre, along with 1 to 5 carp. Before the spawning season begins, typically during winter or just before the start of feeding, it's important to check the gonadal development of the broodstock. Based on this assessment, a plan is made to administer oxytocin to stimulate spawning.
The feeding strategy for broodstock changes throughout the year. In early spring, the diet should focus on green fodder such as young ryegrass and malt, with small amounts of bean cakes and grains added for balance. By mid-April, as the spawning season approaches, the use of concentrated feed should be reduced, and the diet should shift back to green feed. On average, each kilogram of broodstock should receive about 0.5 kg of feed. This careful management ensures better breeding success and healthier offspring.
