Almonds - New Choice for Healthy Nutrition

**Almond: A Healthy Nutrition Choice** December 11, 2006, 14:21 | Beijing Morning Post | http://eat.sina.com.cn Almonds have become a popular choice for health-conscious individuals. Originating from California, the American almond is a natural food packed with essential nutrients. It’s a great source of high-quality protein, dietary fiber, and magnesium, along with important minerals like calcium, phosphorus, zinc, and copper. Although almonds are rich in fats, about 70% of them are unsaturated fats—known to be heart-healthy. These fats can help lower cholesterol levels without contributing to weight gain, making almonds an excellent addition to a balanced diet. One of the standout features of almonds is their high vitamin E content. Vitamin E comes in eight different forms, but alpha-tocopherol is the most beneficial for the human body. The U.S. National Academy of Sciences recommends this form because it's easily absorbed and reaches all cells through the bloodstream. Almonds are one of the best natural sources of vitamin E in the form of tocopherol. A single serving of 28 grams (about 23 almonds) provides around 7.3 mg of vitamin E, offering powerful antioxidant protection. In addition to vitamin E, almonds also contain flavonoids, which act as antioxidants. A study by Tufts University found that when vitamin E and flavonoids from almond skins are consumed together, their antioxidant effects multiply. Eating almonds with the skin on enhances the absorption of these compounds, helping to combat aging and support overall health. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recognized the heart benefits of almonds. In 2003, it approved a health claim stating that eating 1.5 ounces (around 42 grams) of almonds daily, as part of a low-saturated fat and low-cholesterol diet, can reduce the risk of heart disease. This aligns with recommendations from major heart health organizations, which encourage replacing saturated fats with healthy unsaturated fats found in foods like almonds. Research has also shown that almonds can help manage cholesterol levels. Studies from the U.S., Canada, and China suggest that regular almond consumption may lower total and LDL ("bad") cholesterol without affecting HDL ("good") cholesterol. A trial led by Professor Liu Yi at Peking University School of Medicine found that participants who ate almonds saw a 7.6% drop in total cholesterol and a 9% decrease in LDL cholesterol. Moreover, recent studies reveal that almonds are lower in calories than previously believed. They offer a nutrient-dense option for those looking to manage their weight while still getting essential vitamins and minerals. With their combination of healthy fats, fiber, and antioxidants, almonds truly stand out as a smart and satisfying choice for everyday nutrition. ![Almond Image](http://i.bosscdn.com/blog/10/00/00/_20071122042.jpg)

Disposable Endo Fascia Closure System

Disposable minimally invasive fascial closure device is a medical device used to close the abdominal fascia layer after laparoscopic surgery. The device consists of a needle and suture that can be inserted through a small incision in the skin and used to close the layers of fascia without the need for a larger incision. The device is designed to reduce the risk of complications associated with traditional methods of fascial closure, such as wound infection, hernia and dehiscence. The single-use nature of the device also reduces the risk of cross-contamination and infection. Use of the device could shorten recovery time and improve outcomes for patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery.
