Symptoms mainly affect the leaves, extending upward from the lower leaves. In the early stage of infection, oval-to-elliptic chlorotic spots develop, then turn black to brownish gray, and the edges are yellow. When the humidity is high, dark mold layer is formed on the lesions, and the sheath and ears of wheat are withered when severe.
The pathogen reported in China is Alternaria tenuis Nees. Synonyms A.tenuissima (Fr.) Wiltsh. All belong to the fungus Fungi. The bacteria often invade after infestation with root rot or leaf blight, or infestation by aphids. A. tenuis conidial stems straight, branched or unbranched, olive or dark brown, the size of 30-1104-7 (μm). The conidia are ovoid to inverted-stick, brown and brown, with 0–6 longitudinal diaphragms, 1–9 diaphragms, and string size, 20–6011–20 (μm). India reported that Alternaria triticina Prasada et Prabbu called Alternaria solani, which can also cause wheat blight. The conidiophores of this bacterium are solitary. The conidia are ellipsoid to conical and are cut into a mouth at the end, so that they are solitary on the top or form 2-4 short spore chains with a size of 15-907-30 (μm). Each spore has 1 to 10 transverse membranes and 5 vertical membranes. The temperature limit for the growth of pathogens is 5-35°C, and the suitable temperature is 20-24°C.
Transmission routes and pathogenic conditions The pathogens can spread over the winter or summer in the soil along with the diseased body. The seeds can also carry the bacteria. In the spring of the following year, the winter wheat leaves infected by conidial spring wheat or green springs are formed. Wheat fields with low moisture levels or high groundwater levels are heavy, and are generally near maturity. The host resistance is reduced and the disease spreads rapidly.
Prevention methods (1) Apply sufficient organic fertilizer, promote the application of enzyme-based composting; use formula fertilization technology to improve the ability of wheat against leaf blight of Alternaria. (2) If necessary, spray 75% chlorothalonil wettable powder 600 times or 70% mancozeb WP 500 times, 64% WP wettable powder 500 times, 50% acetaminophen wettable powder 1500 times liquid.
