At the 10th Anniversary Celebration and Discussion of the PET Center at Huashan Hospital, affiliated with Fudan University, it was revealed that PET/CT has become one of the most preferred methods for tumor screening. Seven leading medical institutions in Shanghai have now adopted this advanced diagnostic technology. Annually, between 15,000 to 20,000 people in China undergo this cutting-edge imaging examination, marking a growing trend in early cancer detection.
The PET (Positron Emission Tomography) Center at Huashan Hospital is among the first PET centers approved by the Ministry of Health. Since its clinical operations began in December 1998, it has completed nearly 30,000 examinations, making it the top center in terms of case volume nationwide. In June 2008, it was recognized as one of the ten top PET centers at the U.S. Nuclear Medicine Annual Conference, and the only one from Asia to be highlighted.
Xu Zhensheng, the director of the center, emphasized that PET/CT scans have helped detect early abnormalities in about 1.5% of patients who had previously shown no issues in routine check-ups. All of these patients survived after undergoing surgery. Additionally, more than 40% of cancer patients had their treatment plans adjusted based on PET/CT findings, highlighting its critical role in personalized medicine.
PET/CT is considered one of the most advanced medical imaging tools globally. It combines the anatomical precision of CT with the functional and metabolic insights of PET. This non-invasive, one-scan procedure provides a comprehensive view of the entire body, enabling early detection of primary or metastatic tumors. As a result, it has become a gold standard in cancer diagnosis and treatment guidance, offering both accuracy and sensitivity that are essential in modern oncology.
