Today, a reporter learned that Chinese scientists have identified potential pathogenic targets within the structures of SARS and avian influenza viruses. Medical experts highlighted this as a groundbreaking global achievement, which is expected to lay a strong foundation for the future development of drugs with independent intellectual property rights against these viruses.
The 5th Shanghai International Respiratory Symposium and the 16th Asia-Pacific Respiratory Therapy Association kicked off in Shanghai today. Over three days, the event brought together numerous international scholars, including the chairman of the American Thoracic Society, renowned Chinese Academy of Sciences academician Rao Zi, and vice chairman of the Chinese Medical Association’s Respiratory Branch, Bai Chunxue, among others. More than 50 international respiratory researchers will deliver keynote speeches during the conference.
Following the opening ceremony, Rao Zi, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and president of Nankai University, presented a lecture titled “Progress in the Study of the Structure of SARS and Avian Influenza Viruses.†His report showcased new breakthroughs in the field, leaving both Chinese and international scholars impressed and receiving enthusiastic applause. Rao emphasized that while it's uncertain whether SARS will return, related diseases could re-emerge, stressing the importance of continued research on the virus.
Bai Chunxue, chairman of the conference and deputy director of the Chinese Medical Association’s Respiratory Branch, praised the newly discovered pathogenic targets as a world-leading achievement with significant implications for future drug development. He noted that these findings offer crucial insights for creating new treatments with independent intellectual property.
During the meeting, several experts reiterated the dangers of smoking. According to statistics, China currently has 350 million direct smokers and 450 million people exposed to secondhand smoke. In an interview, Bai Chunxue stated that smoking is a major risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, and ischemic heart disease. He revealed that 1.28 million people die annually from COPD, equating to two deaths every minute. It is also predicted that by 2025, one million people will die each year from lung cancer in China. Currently, over two million people in China die yearly from smoking-related illnesses.
Bai Chunxue added that the latest research presented at the conference goes beyond just smoking prevention. The findings suggest that chronic respiratory diseases are linked to immune function, and early detection can significantly reduce mortality. He recommended that lung function tests be included in routine medical check-ups for students and job applicants, especially among smokers.
