Guinea fowl and royal chicken brooding method

Brooding Techniques for Guinea Fowl and Royal Pheasants

Although guinea fowl and royal pheasants are naturally resilient to diseases, successful brooding requires careful attention. At Chongqing Huaguan Rare Bird Farm, they follow a detailed approach to ensure high survival rates. Within the first hour after hatching, chicks are given a diluted potassium permanganate solution (1:5000) to help prevent infections. After 8 hours, this is replaced with electrolyte solutions or Jinweitajia cod liver oil in their drinking water. From day one to day 30, the chicks should have constant access to food and water, ensuring no interruptions. This method has achieved a survival rate of over 95%.

Temperature control is essential during the early stages. For the first 10 days, the temperature should be maintained at 34°C for guinea fowl and 37°C for royal pheasants. It should then be gradually reduced by 0.5°C per day until it reaches 22°C by day 34. Humidity levels should start at 60% for the first week and drop to 50% afterward. In the first week, more than 100 chicks can be housed per square meter, but this number should decrease as they grow.

During the first 10 days, antibiotics such as norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, or enrofloxacin are often used. One of these is added to the drinking water for four days to prevent chicken lice. To prevent coccidiosis, various medications are available, including compound ammoniarin, maduramycin, chloroquine, diclazuril, and others. It's important to choose the right medication and avoid overuse, as some can be toxic if misused. Stress reduction is also key—adding electrolytes or anti-stress supplements to the water can help. With new drugs constantly emerging, it’s crucial to stay informed and consult local experts for the best options.
