How to use the combine safely

With the rapid growth of China's rural economy, increasing farmer incomes, and continuous improvement in scientific and cultural education, rural areas have undergone significant transformations. Traditional farming methods are gradually being replaced by modern agricultural machinery, such as combine harvesters. As the saying goes, "Science and technology is productivity." The use of these machines has significantly accelerated the wheat harvesting process while reducing the physical burden on farmers. However, with the widespread adoption of this equipment, fire hazards during operations have become a growing concern. One of the main risks comes from the exhaust system. The high-temperature exhaust pipes can emit sparks that reach up to 1000°C, which may ignite nearby flammable materials like wheat straw. Incomplete combustion often leads to carbon buildup, increasing the risk of fire. Electrical systems also pose a danger. Faulty wiring, loose connections, or aging components can lead to short circuits or sparks, especially when combined with the high levels of dust present during harvesting. Additionally, carburetor backfires—caused by incorrect ignition timing or improper fuel mixtures—can result in intense flames that easily ignite surrounding materials. Another common cause of fires is smoking by operators. Due to the hot conditions and long hours of work, operators may neglect proper disposal of cigarette butts, which can spark fires. Burning wheat stubble is another major issue. Farmers often burn leftover straw, which can quickly spread to nearby fields or even to the machines themselves. To prevent such incidents, strict fire safety measures must be implemented. Before the harvest season, training for operators should include fire prevention awareness, proper use of fire extinguishing equipment, and emergency response procedures. Regular maintenance of the machinery is essential. Key areas such as the engine, fuel system, and electrical components must be inspected and cleaned regularly. It’s important to ensure that all parts are in good working condition, including checking for oil leaks, electrical faults, and ensuring proper ventilation. Operators should avoid smoking while working and ensure that all fire-fighting tools, such as fire extinguishers and sandbags, are readily available. When operating at night, proper lighting is necessary, and open flames should never be used for maintenance. If a fire does occur, immediate action is required: stop the machine, move it away from flammable materials, and use available fire suppression tools. In case of a large fire, evacuation and calling emergency services are crucial. By taking these precautions, the risk of fire during combine harvester operations can be significantly reduced, ensuring safer and more efficient agricultural practices.
