**Butterfly Beans – A Versatile and Ornamental Plant** Butterfly beans, also known as Blue beans, are a unique and attractive plant commonly referred to by their scientific name *Clitoria ternatea*. They are also sometimes called Butterfly pea or Kordofan pea. This flowering plant is native to the Bay region of Indonesia and is widely cultivated for its beautiful flowers and multiple uses. The plant features pinnate alternate leaves, typically with 3 to 9 leaflets that are ovate to oblong in shape, measuring about 2 to 5 cm in length. The leaves have a membranous texture, with an obtuse apex and slight dimpling. The flowers of butterfly beans are striking, with a corolla length of approximately 4.5 cm. They come in shades of blue, pink, or white and have a distinctive wing-like structure, with the keel flap being much smaller than the other parts. After flowering, the plant produces flat capsules with a long beak, containing 6 to 10 seeds. Butterfly beans are used in various ways. They serve as excellent pasture plants, animal feed, and green manure. The tender shoots are even edible and can be used in cooking. Additionally, they are popular in ornamental gardening, often planted in flower beds, along garden fences, in pots, or hanging baskets. The flowering period of this plant typically occurs from July to October, and it thrives best in full sunlight. It prefers warm and moist conditions but can tolerate partial shade. However, it is sensitive to frost and requires well-drained, loose, and fertile soil for optimal growth. Since butterfly beans are climbing plants, they need support structures like trellises or stakes to grow properly. Regular pruning of the central stems encourages the development of lateral branches, which helps in maintaining a bushy and healthy plant. Propagation is usually done through sowing seeds, although side branch cuttings or stem cuttings can also be effective. It’s important to note that while the plant has many benefits, certain parts are toxic. The mature seeds and roots contain compounds that can cause poisoning if consumed. Symptoms may include stomach upset, vomiting, and diarrhea. Therefore, it’s advisable to avoid eating any part of the plant unless it's clearly identified as safe. Overall, butterfly beans are not only visually appealing but also highly functional in both agricultural and ornamental settings.
