Pepper staking is an essential practice used to prevent branches from drooping or breaking, which can ultimately enhance yield and improve fruit quality. However, many vegetable farmers tend to be careless about the timing of this task, often believing it can be done at any time. Based on practical experience in pepper cultivation, the author found that staking peppers after 3 p.m. yields better results.
After a night of respiration, the greenhouse environment tends to accumulate high levels of carbon dioxide, while light intensity and temperature gradually return to optimal conditions in the morning. This makes the early morning the prime period for photosynthesis in pepper leaves, accounting for about 70% to 80% of the total daily photosynthetic activity. If staking is performed in the morning, the leaves may shift their position, reducing the surface area exposed to sunlight and thereby hindering photosynthesis. If the leaves remain in this altered position for too long, they may miss the most efficient photosynthetic window, which negatively affects overall productivity.
In contrast, after 3 p.m., light intensity decreases, ventilation increases, and carbon dioxide levels drop, causing the photosynthetic rate of pepper leaves to slow down. At this time, staking has minimal impact on photosynthesis. Additionally, the petioles of the leaves are more flexible in the afternoon, making them less prone to damage during the staking process. When staking, it's recommended to keep the rope about 25 centimeters away from the growing tip of the pepper plant. This allows the growth point to develop at an angle rather than straight up, preventing the leaves from shading each other. This technique helps maximize light exposure, promotes better vegetative growth, and ultimately increases the yield of the pepper plants.
