Shihai Pepper Garlic Yellow Linen

Scientific Name: Reinwardtia trigyna

Common Names: Gold Parrot, Yellow Linen

Family: Linaceae

Origin:

Native to the southwestern regions of China, as well as Vietnam, India, and Indonesia. It is widely cultivated throughout the southern areas, especially in warm and sunny climates.

Growth Habits:

This plant thrives in full sun and well-ventilated, warm environments. It prefers fertile, well-draining soil and is commonly found in low-altitude calcareous soils that are not too cold.

Morphological Features:

It can grow up to 1 meter tall, with a slender, green stem. The leaves are alternate, elliptical or obovate-elliptical in shape, measuring 2 to 6 cm in length. They may be entire or slightly toothed along the edges. The plant produces one to several yellow flowers, each about 2.5 cm in diameter. The fruit is a spherical follicle, and both flowering and fruiting occur during the summer months.

Humidity Management:

It prefers a humid or semi-dry climate, with an ideal relative air humidity between 50% and 70%. If the air becomes too dry, the lower leaves may turn yellow and fall off, while the upper leaves may lose their shine and vitality.

Temperature Management:

As a subtropical plant, it requires relatively warm conditions. Growth stops when temperatures drop below 8°C, so it should be protected from frost and cold drafts during winter.

Light Requirements:

It adapts well to different light conditions. When kept indoors, place it in bright, well-lit areas such as living rooms, bedrooms, or studies. After being indoors for about a month, it can be moved outdoors to a shaded spot (with proper insulation in winter) for another month to maintain its health and vigor.

Fertilizer Management:

For potted plants, it's beneficial to add organic fertilizer to the topsoil. Regular watering combined with appropriate fertilization during the growing season will help keep the plant healthy and vibrant.

Propagation:

It can be propagated through seeds, which are easy to germinate under suitable conditions.

Uses:

This plant is often used in artificial rock walls, protective ridges, and stepped lime joints, where it grows very well. It’s ideal for rock gardens, vertical wall gaps, and other three-dimensional greening projects. It also makes a nice potted plant for indoor decoration.

Medicinal Use:

The leaves have medicinal properties, including anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, and heat-clearing effects, making them useful for promoting diuresis and overall wellness.
