How to reduce rabbit feed waste

A well-balanced feed mixture ensures that the energy and protein levels in the diet remain in harmony. It's important to pay attention to the amino acid balance, as well as maintaining a proper ratio of calcium to phosphorus. These factors play a crucial role in supporting the overall health and growth of rabbits. The design and height of the feeding trough and straw frame should be appropriate for the rabbits. The height of the feeding trough should match the level of the rabbit’s back, making it easy for them to eat without strain. If the trough is too low, the feed may be pushed out, leading to waste. Additionally, the amount of feed provided at each meal should not exceed one-third of the trough’s capacity to avoid overfeeding and spoilage. The form of the feed matters as well. Pelleted feed is ideal for rabbits, with particle sizes smaller than 0.64 cm in length and 0.48 cm in diameter. This helps improve digestion and prevents issues like diarrhea. Combining the pellets with indigestible, bulky cellulose can extend the time the feed stays in the cecum, promoting better nutrient absorption and digestive health. Feed storage must be carefully managed. It should be kept dry and stored in a cool, dark place to prevent mold growth. Direct exposure to sunlight should be avoided, as it can cause the degradation of essential nutrients. Temperature control is also vital. When the ambient temperature drops below 12°C, rabbits tend to consume more feed, but their growth rate and feed conversion efficiency may decline. On the other hand, when temperatures rise above 30°C, rabbits reduce their heat production, which leads to lower feed intake and decreased productivity. Therefore, maintaining a stable temperature between 12°C and 30°C in the rabbit house is essential for optimal health and performance.
