Pest control measures

In winter, it's essential to manage pomegranate trees properly to reduce the risk of pests and diseases in the following growing season. One of the most effective measures is thorough cleaning and pruning after the leaves have fallen but before new growth begins. During this time, focus on removing unwanted branches such as root sprouts, leggy shoots, overly dense branches, weak or thin branches, diseased or infested branches, drooping branches, crossing or overlapping branches. After pruning, it's important to protect the wounds by applying a wound sealant or anti-corrosion film. This helps promote healing and prevents pathogen entry. During the spring bud and flowering stages, attention should be given to controlling aphids and thrips, which can damage the tree and spread diseases. For insect control, you can use 33% Chlorine Emulsion diluted at 1500 times (12ml per 1L water) and spray both the upper and lower surfaces of the leaves. If pests persist within 3-5 days, apply 2.5% WP (10g per 1L water), repeating every 7-10 days. To address bacterial infections, use 10% World High Water Dispersible Granules diluted at 3000 times or 20% Propiconazole EC also at 3000 times. The young fruit stage is crucial for preventing diseases like pomegranate opiate disease. Using 25% EC at the right time has shown excellent results. Before and after June 5th, spraying the entire garden with a mixture of Forriflin + Diflubenzuron + foliar fertilizer + Carbendazim can effectively control the first generation of larvae. During flowering, fruit development, and fruit expansion, applying a product like Zhuang Ti Ling can help protect flowers, preserve fruit, and enhance the tree’s resistance. As the fruits begin to enlarge, it's important to prevent diseases like dry rot, soft rot, and sesame disease. A Bordeaux mixture (approximately 200 times concentration) can be sprayed every two weeks to provide broad-spectrum protection. In cases of severe infection, specific fungicides like biocontrol agents, mancozeb, or carbendazim may be used. During the fruit maturation phase, focus on controlling peach aphid and sesame disease. Apply 50% Phoxim EC diluted at 800 or 2000 times, and remove the leaves around the fruit to prevent the spread of P. avenae. Additionally, spray 25% Difenoconazole Emulsion diluted at 3000 times to protect the fruit surface from spot diseases. After harvesting, it's vital to manage leaf fall and dry rot. Clear all fallen leaves, remove diseased and rotten fruits, and burn or bury them to eliminate overwintering pathogens. Scrape affected branches and deep lesions, then apply protective treatments like tree maintenance products to ensure the tree remains healthy for the next season.
