Corn is highly susceptible to pests from the moment it emerges until it reaches maturity. Ensuring high-quality and high-yield corn requires effective and timely pest management, especially when it comes to controlling corn borers, which can cause significant damage if left unchecked.
Corn borer, also known as corn worm, is a common pest that primarily affects corn plants and poses a serious threat. The first-instar larvae burrow into the leaves and the central part of the plant, creating small holes once the leaves unfurl. As they grow, these larvae feed on the stalks, tassels, and even the ears, often tunneling into the kernels and causing substantial losses. To effectively manage this pest, it's crucial to focus on two critical periods for treatment.
First, during the leaf stage, the larvae are most vulnerable to insecticides, making it the optimal time for intervention. You can apply 3% carbofuran granules or 1% 1605 emulsion granules (mix 0.5 kg of 50% ethyl 1605 EC with 10 kg of water and blend with 25 kg of coal dust or fine sand). Apply about 1 gram of the mixture per plant, with a total of 2 kg per acre. Based on past experience, mixing methamidophos and cypermethrin in a 9:1 ratio and diluting it 1,000 times before applying it directly to the heart leaves has proven to be very effective.
Second, during the heading stage, when the corn is tasseling and silking, older larvae become more active and start feeding on the tassels and stalks. At this point, spraying the tassels and ears with 50% dichlorvos diluted 500 times or 90% trichlorfon diluted 800 times can help control the infestation. Another effective method is to apply the solution directly to the silk at the end of pollination, or to cut off the top 2% of the ear to reduce the risk of borer infestation.
Proper timing and the right application methods are essential to ensure the success of these treatments. Monitoring your fields regularly and acting quickly can make a big difference in protecting your crop and maximizing yield.
