Prevention of corn borer catch two "periods"

Corn is highly susceptible to pests from the time it emerges until it reaches maturity. To ensure high-quality and high-yield corn production, effective pest management is essential. Among the various pests, the corn borer is particularly concerning due to the significant damage it can cause. This pest is commonly found in cornfields and poses a serious threat if not controlled properly. The corn borer, also known as the borerworm, primarily targets corn plants. The first-instar larvae burrow into the leaves and the heart of the plant, creating small, linear holes once the leaves open. As the larvae grow older, they feed on the stalks, tassels, and even the ears, often tunneling into the kernels and causing severe yield loss. Therefore, timely and effective control measures are crucial. To manage corn borers effectively, it's important to focus on two critical periods: 1. **Leaf Stage Control** During this phase, the larvae are most vulnerable to insecticides, making it the ideal time for intervention. You can use 3% carbofuran granules or 1% 1605 emulsion granules. For example, mixing 0.5 kg of 50% ethyl 1605 EC with 10 kg of water and combining it with 25 kg of coal dust or fine sand allows for even distribution. Apply approximately 1 gram of the mixture per plant, which amounts to about 2 kg per acre. Another effective method is to mix methamidophos with cypermethrin in a 9:1 ratio, dilute it 1000 times, and spray it directly onto the heart leaves. This approach has proven to be very effective in reducing infestation. 2. **Tasseling Stage Prevention** At this stage, the corn is pollinating, and the older larvae become more active, feeding on the tassels and stalks. To control them, you can spray 50% dichlorvos diluted 500 times or 90% trichlorfon diluted 800 times directly onto the tassels and ears. Another practical strategy is to apply the insecticide to the silks at the end of pollination. Additionally, cutting off the top 2% of the ear can help reduce the risk of infestation by limiting the larvae’s access to the kernels. By implementing these strategies at the right time, farmers can significantly reduce the impact of corn borers and protect their crops from potential losses. Regular monitoring and early intervention are key to successful pest management in corn fields.
