How to prevent scrapie

Scrapie is caused by prions. Usually occurs in sheep aged 2 to 4 years old, and the incidence of sheep is more than 3 years old. The disease can be transmitted orally, but it can also be caused by the infection of placenta or body fluids containing prions.

First, the symptoms

The incubation period is very long and the natural infection is 1 to 5 years. Therefore, clinical symptoms are rarely seen in sheep under 1 year of age. Sick sheep showed neurological symptoms, increased excitability in the early stages, easily frightened, ataxia, and tremors in head and neck or abdominal rib muscles. During the development period, the diseased sheep has severe itching, often biting abdominal ribs, thighs or tail, or rubbing these parts on the walls, fences, trunks and other objects, a large number of hair loss, skin irritation and inflammation, and even rupture bleeding. The body temperature of the diseased sheep is normal, but it is gradually becoming thin and often unable to jump. Within a few weeks or months of illness, the mortality rate was nearly 100%.

Second, prevention

There is no effective vaccine and any medicine can prevent and treat the disease. Since scrapie has a particularly long incubation period and disease course, as well as the special stability of scrapie bacteria, the use of isolation, disinfection and other general preventive measures are invalid. Therefore, resolutely not introducing sheep from areas with a history of scrapie is a fundamental measure to prevent the disease.
