Key Laboratory of Cardiovascular Disease Regenerative Medicine passed the acceptance of the Ministry of Health

Release date: April 3, 2008

In 2004, the Key Laboratory of Cardiovascular Disease Regenerative Medicine was officially established under the Ministry of Health, marking a significant step in advancing regenerative medicine research in China. As medical science has progressed rapidly in fields such as molecular biology, cell biology, and materials science, the possibility of regenerating or re-inventing damaged tissues and organs has become a reality, giving rise to the concept of "regenerative medicine." This laboratory was created with a clear mission: to align its research goals closely with public health needs, especially in response to the growing demands of national development and healthcare advancements.

The laboratory was formed by integrating the original valve and circulation research laboratory with the biochemistry laboratory, building on a strong foundation of prior research. Located at the Fuwai Cardiovascular Hospital, it is positioned as a key player in cardiovascular regenerative medicine. Its research focuses on both basic and clinical studies related to the prevention and treatment of advanced heart diseases, as well as the development of tissue-engineered valves, artificial heart valves, and ventricular assist devices. The overall goal is to identify effective strategies for preventing advanced heart disease, understand the mechanisms and clinical benefits of regenerative treatments for cardiomyocytes, and evaluate the role of prosthetic valves and cardiac assist devices in heart regeneration.

In January 2008, the Ministry of Health's Science and Education Department conducted an inspection and acceptance of the laboratory. Experts reviewed detailed reports and conducted on-site evaluations, ensuring that the facility met high standards of scientific excellence and practical application. Professor Hu Shengshou, the laboratory director, emphasized that while the department has become a leading center in cardiovascular regenerative medicine in China, it still faces challenges. Despite its growing reputation and research capabilities, the lab lacks internationally recognized scientists and high-impact academic publications. He called for continued investment in personnel training and infrastructure to strengthen its global competitiveness.

Supported by the Ministry of Health, Fuwai Hospital, and various experts across the country, the laboratory continues to grow. However, the path ahead remains long, and ongoing collaboration and support will be essential for its future success. – Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association
