The Key Laboratory of Cardiovascular Disease Regenerative Medicine successfully passed the Ministry of Health's evaluation and acceptance in 2008. With the rapid progress in medical molecular biology, cell science, and materials technology, the concept of "regenerative medicine" has emerged, aiming to restore or replace damaged tissues and organs through artificial regeneration. This laboratory was established in July 2004, following approval from the Ministry of Health, with the goal of addressing critical health challenges and aligning research with national needs.
Originally formed by integrating the valve and circulatory research laboratory with the biochemistry lab, the Key Laboratory of Cardiovascular Regenerative Medicine is based at the Fuwai Cardiovascular Hospital. It has a solid foundation in research and focuses on both basic and clinical studies related to advanced heart diseases. The lab is actively involved in developing tissue-engineered valves, new artificial heart valves, and ventricular assist devices. Its primary objective is to identify effective prevention strategies for severe heart conditions, understand the mechanisms and clinical applications of regenerative treatments for cardiomyocytes, and explore the role of prosthetic valves and cardiac assist devices in advanced cardiac regeneration.
On January 31, 2008, an expert panel from the Ministry of Health’s Science and Education Department conducted a comprehensive inspection and evaluation of the laboratory. They reviewed detailed reports, listened to presentations from Professor Hu Shengshou, the lab director, and conducted on-site assessments of all laboratory facilities.
In his address, Professor Hu Shengshou noted that while the laboratory has become a leading center for cardiovascular regenerative medicine in China, it still faces challenges in gaining global recognition. He emphasized the need for more internationally renowned scientists, high-quality academic publications, and stronger personnel development. Despite these challenges, the lab continues to benefit from strong support from the Ministry of Health, Fuwai Hospital, and various domestic experts. Looking ahead, the lab remains committed to advancing its mission and welcomes continued collaboration and support. - Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association
