Chongqing Institute of Technology successfully developed an anesthesia safety intelligent monitor

April 21, 2008 Chongqing Institute of Technology has successfully developed an intelligent anesthesia safety monitor, supported by the Chongqing Municipal Bureau of Information Industry. This advanced device is designed to enhance the safety and accuracy of clinical anesthesia monitoring during surgical procedures. The technology is expected to significantly improve the overall safety of anesthesia use in operating rooms, reducing risks and improving patient outcomes. Anesthesia plays a critical role in many surgeries, but it comes with inherent risks. During general anesthesia, there is a 1% to 2% chance that patients may experience awareness, which can lead to psychological distress, fear, and even long-term distrust in medical professionals. On the other hand, an overdose of anesthesia can be life-threatening. Therefore, precise control of anesthesia levels is essential—not only to ensure the patient remains unconscious during surgery but also to minimize complications, reduce costs, and improve recovery times. Led by Professor Zhou Qi from the College of Bioengineering at Chongqing Institute of Technology, the research team conducted an in-depth analysis of key anesthesia-related parameters, including the auditory evoked potential (AAI) index, the electroencephalogram (BIS) index, heart rate variability, and brain blood oxygenation levels. Based on these data, they created an intelligent anesthesia safety index model and developed new sensors for signal acquisition and amplification. This led to the creation of the anesthesia safety intelligent monitor. The device offers comprehensive monitoring of various physiological parameters, such as anesthesia depth, five-lead ECG, respiration, non-invasive blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and body temperature. It also includes features like arrhythmia detection, ST segment analysis, data and waveform storage, printing capabilities, and network monitoring. These functions make it a versatile tool suitable for different clinical settings. The prototype has already been completed and has obtained a medical device registration certificate. With further industrial development, the monitor is expected to be widely used in operating rooms, intensive care units (ICUs), and coronary care units (CCUs), enhancing the quality of anesthesia care across the healthcare system. —Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association
