At present, the Chinese medicinal herb Banlangen is showing great potential in the market, and it's now the ideal time for spring sowing. So, how exactly is Banlangen cultivated during this season?
First, selecting the right soil is crucial. Banlangen is a deep-rooted plant, with its main root reaching up to 40-50 cm in length. Therefore, it's best to choose a deep, well-drained, and fertile sandy loam soil for planting. Before sowing, the land should be prepared by digging to a depth of 20-30 cm. Sandy soils can be slightly lighter, but it's important to apply a base fertilizer, mainly composed of farmyard manure. After that, the soil clods should be broken down, and the field should be leveled. The planting beds are typically about 1.5 to 2 meters wide and 20 cm high.
Second, seedlings of Banlangen are usually sown between March and April. When planting, create shallow furrows about 2 cm deep, spaced 20-25 cm apart on the surface of the bed. Evenly distribute the seeds into the furrows, cover them with about 1 cm of soil, and water when the soil becomes slightly dry. Under suitable temperatures, seedlings should emerge within 7-10 days after sowing. The recommended seed rate per mu is 1.5-2 kg.
Third, field management is essential once the seedlings have emerged. When the plants reach a height of 7-10 cm, it's time to perform weeding and thinning, ensuring that the spacing between plants is around 6-8 cm. After thinning, depending on the growth of the plants, it's advisable to apply either human urine or chemical fertilizers. In areas with poor drainage or during rainy seasons, adding deeper ditches around the field helps prevent waterlogging and root rot. During dry periods, watering in the early morning and late evening is recommended, avoiding direct sunlight exposure.
Fourth, harvesting and processing. Banlangen sown in spring can be harvested two to three times. The first harvest usually takes place in mid-June, when the seedlings are about 20 cm tall. At this stage, leave 2-3 cm of the stem to encourage new leaf growth. The second harvest is typically in late August, and it's best to avoid harvesting during the hottest months to prevent plant damage. The leaves are then dried and used as medicinal material known as "black leaves." High-quality Banlangen should be large, intact, clean, dark green, and free from mold. Banlangen roots are best harvested before winter, on a sunny day. Carefully dig up the roots, making sure to go deep to avoid damaging them. After lifting the roots, remove any excess soil, stems, and leaves. Dry the roots until they reach 70-80% moisture, then bundle them into small groups and continue drying for sale. This careful process ensures the quality and effectiveness of the final product.
