Early Spring Laying Tips

In the context of early spring laying hens, we are referring to chicks that hatch around the end of February in the lunar calendar. These hens grow quickly, generate higher profits, and offer better economic returns compared to other breeds. Proper care during their early stages is crucial for their development and overall productivity. Temperature control is one of the most important factors in raising these chicks. The ideal temperature for early spring chickens should be around 28°C. Maintaining this warmth is essential for their survival and growth. For small-scale rearing, wooden boxes, grass nests, or cardboard boxes can be used. These should be lined with old batting or soft grass and placed near the stove’s side to provide a warm environment. If you’re raising a larger number of chicks, it's important to seal the breeding room tightly and use quilts or straw curtains to retain heat. At the same time, the furnace should be kept running to maintain a stable temperature. Feeding practices must also be carefully managed. Chicks should be given food 24 hours after hatching. Initially, the rice should be soaked for 6 hours and then offered in small amounts to avoid overfeeding. Feed them 4 to 5 times daily. On day three, introduce chopped green feed to supplement their diet. By day five, you can start feeding them a mix of rice or commercial layer feed. Before offering water, make sure they have access to warm, clean water—never cold or dirty water. Encouraging physical activity is another key aspect of raising healthy chicks. If they aren’t moving freely in the nest, gently move them by hand four times a day. You can also allow them to roam in a shaded area for short periods to promote movement and strengthen their muscles. However, avoid long exposure to direct sunlight, especially in the early days. Disease prevention is equally important. Keep the chicken coop clean at all times. Regularly replace and sun-dry the bedding to reduce the risk of infection. Clean the coop frequently to maintain hygiene. Add a small amount of furazolidone to the drinking water to prevent gastrointestinal issues. After two weeks, administer the appropriate vaccines, and repeat the vaccination process after two months to ensure long-term protection against common diseases. By following these guidelines, you can significantly improve the health, growth, and profitability of your early spring laying hens. With proper care and attention, they will develop into strong, productive layers that contribute well to your farm’s success.
