The dry seedling technique for rice cultivation without the need for transplanting involves using a specialized slow-release, high-absorbency seed coating agent called “Dry-Nanny.†This innovative method simplifies traditional rice farming by coating seeds with the agent and directly planting them in the field. Here’s a detailed guide on how to implement this technique:
First, select the appropriate variety. For dry seeding, it's essential to use the "Dry Nurse" type of seed coating agent, which is specifically designed for this purpose.
Next, determine the correct dosage. Each 350-gram bag of “Dry-Nanny†can be used to coat between 1 to 1.5 kilograms of rice seeds, ensuring even coverage and optimal performance.
Before coating, soak the seeds in clean water for 12 to 24 hours. The soaking time may vary depending on temperature—longer at lower temperatures and shorter at higher ones.
After soaking, drain the seeds until they no longer drip. Then, mix the seeds with the “Dry-Nanny†coating agent in a ratio of 1:1.5 (seed to coating agent). Ensure all the seeds are evenly coated.
Choose a suitable nursery site with good soil quality and minimal weeds. Loamy or muddy fields are ideal. Apply sufficient base fertilizer and prepare the bed properly to ensure healthy growth.
Water the nursery bed thoroughly before sowing. The soil should be moist enough to reach a depth of 0–10 cm in saturation, creating an ideal environment for germination.
Sow the coated seeds uniformly and cover them lightly with a 2–3 cm layer of fine soil. This helps protect the seeds while allowing them to establish roots effectively.
Apply a specific herbicide designed for dry land, such as a drought-inhibiting grass control agent, to prevent weed competition.
On the first afternoon after sowing, water the seedlings again to help form a hygroscopic mud ball around the roots, making it easier to lift and transplant the seedlings later. Typically, one or two seedlings are harvested at a time.
The method of throwing seedlings and field management in Daejeon follows similar practices to conventional plastic tray methods. Pest and disease control should also be handled in the same way.
For hybrid rice varieties, approximately 1.5 kg per mu is recommended. The seed-to-soil ratio for Putian and Datian varieties should be 1:12–15.
After sowing, monitor the temperature. If it's cold, cover the seedbed with a plastic film to retain heat and moisture.
Avoid watering the seedlings for the first two days after casting to allow the coating agent to work effectively.
This technique offers a more efficient and cost-effective approach to rice cultivation, reducing labor and improving yield potential. It’s especially beneficial for small-scale farmers looking to adopt modern agricultural practices. Yicheng City Agricultural Technology Demonstration Project Expert Group
