Summer pruning of peach trees can support fruit production, reduce excessive vegetative growth, encourage flower bud formation, enhance air circulation and light penetration within the canopy, improve fruit quality, and ultimately increase yield. During this period, it's important to remove strong and vigorous new shoots. Wait until they reach 18 to 20 centimeters in length before pinching out the tip to control apical dominance. For new shoots located on the lower and middle parts of the tree, pinch them when they grow to about 20 centimeters. For extension branches, it’s recommended to pinch them at 40 centimeters to stimulate new growth and speed up canopy development. Another technique is twisting the tip of the shoot, which helps suppress upward growth, promotes flower bud differentiation, and improves light exposure. This method is particularly useful for new shoots on the main branches of extended limbs. The tip should be twisted when the shoot reaches around 30 centimeters in length, but not yet lignified. The twist should be applied at about 15 centimeters from the tip. However, avoid twisting the tips of all branches, as this could weaken the overall tree structure. For young trees, gently pulling branches outward can help reduce tree vigor, shape the tree, and promote early fruiting. The ideal angle for branch pulling is around 80 degrees, and it’s important not to pull branches into a completely horizontal position, as that may cause structural issues. Injury techniques involve making small cuts or wounds on the upper part of buds or branches. This stimulates growth at the injury site and increases the potential of nearby buds. Injuries made lower down on the branch can encourage flower bud formation, boost fruit production, and enhance shoot development. When making these injuries, use a sharp knife to carefully cut through the bark without damaging the inner tissues. Throughout the growing season, it's essential to thin out the canopy by removing sparse, upright, dense, slender, unused auxiliary shoots, and diseased branches. This helps prevent excessive shoot growth, avoids canopy closure, conserves nutrients, and improves airflow and light distribution within the tree.
