Genetically Modified Sheep Extrude Human Milk Nutrients Can Help Prevent Diseases in Humans

In the near future, as long as you drink milk, you can prevent colds. Shanghai researchers have for the first time made goats secrete human milk through genetic modification and cloning techniques. The concept of “animal medicine factory” put forward by scientists more than 20 years ago is becoming a reality. In the “Goat House” of the Nanhui Experimental Base at Shanghai GM Research Center, the reporter saw that these 6 can only secrete high-activity human lysozyme and 40 can only secrete human lactoferrin to produce the “goat nurse”. The content of human lysozyme in goat milk is up to 4 milligrams per milliliter, several times higher than that in human milk, reaching the world's leading level; human lactoferrin content also reaches 0.5 milligrams per milliliter, and it is approaching the content of human milk. Cheng Guoxiang, director of the Shanghai Institute of Transgenic Research, said: "Human lysozyme has antibacterial, antiviral and anti-tumor functions. Human lactoferrin also has anti-cancer function, so it can be developed into drugs and corresponding foods in the future." These resources in the medical field are difficult to obtain in large quantities due to their high activity. Now, human lactoferrin secreted from somatic cell cloned transgenic goat milk has been granted a patent, and the related technology of goat milk secreting human lysozyme has also applied for a patent. Scientists plan to produce 2,000 transgenic goats containing the human lysozyme gene within three years, to achieve an annual production capacity of 1.5 tons of highly active human lysozyme pure material, and strive to achieve yield.
